Why Buy Fractional Silver?

People have differing opinions about fractional silver (silver in weights less than 1 Troy ounce).  Some think it is a great way to buy silver, and some not.  The main reason some will say not to buy fractional silver is that if you compare the price on a per-ounce basis it costs more to buy.  Depending on where you buy it, it can be much more.  So, at first glance, it would seem paying more per ounce wouldn’t make sense.  In truth, though, there are EXCELLENT reasons to buy fractional silver that could result in it being a much BETTER way to buy silver.  Following are some reasons I believe buying fractional is a great way to invest in silver.

1)  You can recoup the per-ounce premium paid for fractional silver when you sell it later, making it no more costly per ounce than 1 ounce silver.  It costs more per ounce to buy, but sells for the same per-ounce premium. The only time you won’t recoup the difference is if you sell to a dealer who is only paying based on the current spot value.  It is seldom a good idea to sell back to a dealer, though, unless you absolutely have to.  Nothing against dealers - they are in business to make money, but selling to them won’t get you the most value.  Selling privately through auction sites like eBay, or on free sites like Facebook Marketplace* or Craigslist* is the better way to go.  The one time it doesn’t make sense to buy fractional is if you are investing in silver solely to resell later and you anticipate needing to sell a lot of silver quickly back to a dealer. In that case, you should purchase in 1 Oz. increments or larger.

2)   If you are investing in silver with the idea that the U.S. Treasury just can't keep printing unlimited money with no consequences, or in preparation of a "Sh*t Hits the Fan" event, and that silver offers a stable form of value for trading purposes, 1 oz and larger silver pieces may end up being too large for practical use.  Fractional silver in 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce, or even 1 gram sizes offers a more practical answer for smaller transactions.  You may end up wishing you paid a bit more per ounce for fractional when you end up wasting a 1 oz. round to buy a dozen eggs and loaf of bread.

3)  It is easier to begin saving and to incrementally purchase silver by buying fractional silver at lower cost per unit.  We don’t all have the luxury of spending what it costs to buy one ounce of silver.  Instead of waiting until you a buy a full ounce you can enjoy the fun of stacking right away.  Don’t have $90 to spend right now for an ounce of silver?  No problem!  Instead, forego a couple of cups of designer coffee and buy a small round instead.  Since shipping at Wolverine Silver is always free, you can buy as little as one piece at a time cost effectively.

4)  Fractional silver offers protection against fake or “counterfeit” silver.  The fake silver black market has not attacked the fractional market in the same way it has the 1 oz. and above market.  If you want a sobering look at how prevalent counterfeit silver is, visit aliexpress.com and enter “1 oz silver” or “silver coins” into the search bar.  Seriously, if you haven’t before do it right now - trust me. That stuff is sold as “replica” but what do you think is actually happening to it? Yep – it’s going on Ebay, Etsy and everywhere else silver is sold. What you won’t find on aliexpress.com is fractional silver, offering you a layer of protection against the fakes.

5)  Fractional silver is just fun to have.  Fractional offers something unique and sometimes it’s nice to have variety. Maybe this alone isn’t the strongest argument for buying fractional, but with all of the other reasons you should consider having fractional in your stack.
